Akko / acre

The Land of Israel is the land bridge connecting three continents: Asia, Africa, and Europe. It is also a narrow corridor between the desert and the sea. One cannot understand the story of this land without understanding life in this corridor. Armies, cultures, ethnic groups, ideas, beliefs, wealth, and technological inventions passed from continent to continent through this bridge. And perhaps the best example of this bridge is the city with the best natural harbor in the country – Acre (Akko).

Its human, cultural, ethnic, and religious mosaic is a microcosm of the Galilee, which in turn is a microcosm of Israel. Sufi Muslims, Christians, Druze, Bahá’ís, and Tunisian Jews are just part of this mosaic.

Acre is the only city in the country that has been declared a UNESCO World Heritage Site twice. No empire or civilization has left this city untouched by its mark.

You could spend a week in Acre – descending into the underground Crusader capital, our very own “Pompeii,” banging in vain against its walls like the unfortunate Napoleon, getting lost in the maze of alleys and flavors of its market, or hopping between secret rooftops for a midday glass of wine.
